Why is today called Good Friday? This is the day on the church calendar that we remember the crucifixion of Jesus. He was tortured and died a horrible death for us. The innocent Lamb of God was sacrificed for guilty sinners. What could possibly make this a “good” day?

The origin of the naming of this day Good Friday is debated. But suffice it to say that though it was a dark day, it’s also an amazingly wonderful day. Through sadness and death came joy and life. Christians may celebrate with wonder that Jesus willingly died a horrible death to give beautiful life for sinners.

What love! “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13. What kind of love is this? “See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are.” 1 John 3:1

Amazing. Wondrous. On this Good Friday, be amazed. Ask, what kind of love is this, that Jesus would die for sinners…for me?

What Wondrous Love Is This is an old American folk hymn set to the tune WONDROUS LOVE. Contemplate the death of Jesus as you listen. The words are below the video to follow along.

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb, I will sing.
To God and to the Lamb Who is the great ‘I am’;
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
While millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And through eternity, I’ll sing on.

I am a follower of Christ, changed from my old self, but not perfect by a long shot. Husband, father, grandfather. I’m thankful to be on God’s journey.
