What and How Do We Pray?

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26

What do we do when we don’t even know what to pray? This happens so often to me. How should I pray for one of you, my children? To get that job you want? I don’t know what’s best for you. I don’t even know what’s best for me lots of times. I think I do.

But ultimately only God truly knows what is best for each of us and so we must pray recognizing, and even verbalizing, that God does what is best for his glory and our good (Romans 8:28). We are really and truly in his hands.

I just read some words from a missionary living in Ukraine. This woman said, The Psalms have truly come alive for us here. I don’t always know how to pray, so all I can say is; “God help! Lord have mercy!” And then I go to the Psalms.

The Psalms. Yes, God’s word is her source of comfort, and even words to pray. The Psalms can be that place to go when you don’t know what to pray. In Psalm 149 we read, For the Lord takes pleasure in His people;
He will beautify the humble with salvation.

Then we can pray, “Lord thank you and praise you that you take pleasure in me! Even me! And I know you will save me one way or another. Help me to be more humble…more like Jesus.”

Be encouraged to read God’s word. He comforts us and strengthens us and helps us when we feel like we don’t even know what to say to God. Don’t worry. He’s got you!

I am a follower of Christ, changed from my old self, but not perfect by a long shot. Husband, father, grandfather. I’m thankful to be on God’s journey.
